City Tour: An afternoon to getting to know the Imperial City

03 July 2018

Cusco, one of the most touristic cities of South America, was the capital of the Inca Empire, an important cultural center of the Andes, Navel of the World, cultural center and axis of the Inca religious cult, and nowadays Archaeological Capital of America and Cultural Heritage of Humanity; many attractions to describe and perhaps little time to getting to know, that is why by means of a city tour you can get to know the main tourist attractions of the city in one afternoon.

You can start with the Plaza de Armas of Cuzco, administrative center of the Inca Empire, surrounded by Inca palaces that today are colonial mansions built on Inca stones, accompanied by the magnificent Cathedral of Cusco where stood the palace of Inca Wiracocha, the Plaza the Armas, the main square of Cusco, is perhaps one of the most attractive places in the historic center since it shelters beautiful colonial buildings, as well as the main tourist shops, such as restaurants, hotels, jewelry stores, nightclubs, etc.

A few meters away is Qoricancha, an Inca temple where the Sun god was worshiped, the religious center of Cusco in the Inca apogee, decorated with gold plates, it also housed other deities and life-size animals and plants made of gold adorned its facilities as well as the god Sun in great size also made of gold and the Moon goddess made of silver. And a few minutes from the center of the city is Sacsayhuaman, an Inca fortress, one of the best architectural works of the Inca apogee where the Inti Raymi was celebrated and is still celebrated, which is the main religious festival of Cusco, where the Sun God was worshiped, this festival is currently celebrated in the month of June. Due to the location of this fortress in the northern part of Cusco and to a considerable height, you can enjoy a panoramic view of the entire city. Nearby is Qenqo, which at the time of the Inca Empire was another center dedicated to the rite, and as an attraction it has a semicircular amphitheater and underground galleries.

Another nearby site is Puca Pucara, a military construction located near Cusco. This fortress is composed of large walls, terraces and stairways. And to finish the tour, there is Tambomachay, an archaeological site that was dedicated to the cult of water. And thus, in one afternoon, you can visit these beautiful places, for which Hierba Buena Tours has the perfect tour: https://www.cuscotravelguide.com/en/city-tour-cusco
