Inca Trail to Machu Picchu closed for maintenance

A total of 43 kilometers of the trail, route considered one of the best treks in the world and recently declared a World Heritage Site, will be temporarily closed in February, due to cleaning, upkeep and maintenance

The section, which covers forests and stone steps from the fifteenth century, begins in the Inca fortress of Ollantaytambo and reach the Puerta del Sol, where majestic views of the ruins of Machu Picchu is offered.

At least 60 specialists and technicians participate in the planned activities according to Regulation Conservation Network of Inca Trails

Maintenance includes the drainage system, cutting vegetation and reforestation, conservation of 18 monuments and archaeological sites, arrangement of terraces and restrooms along the route
