Machu Picchu was named top world attraction by TripAdvisor.com in their World Travel Awards 2013. Peru earned five out of the 10 top attractions in the South American category, making it one of the most popular countries among travelers to this region.
The awards were chosen by members of the TripAdvisor website and though it’s hard to quantify what impact this award will have on Peru’s tourism industry, some say it may result in an increase in the number of visitors who will travel to Peru and Cusco.
Jose Luis Silva, the minister of tourism, is among those who believe this recognition will be beneficial on all levels.
“Peru is making news on an international scale,” he told El Comercio. “This is going to be felt not only at Machu Picchu and Southern Peru, but throughout the country, like at the Moche Trail and the northern Amazon region.”
The head man at the national tourism body says that the influence of Prom-Peru and Marca Peru’s publicity campaigns have paid off.
He points to the “Peru, imperio de tesoros escondidos” ad by Prom-Peru, and Marca Peru´s efforts to advertise a diverse sampling of Peru’s destinations on the travel site. Those promotions were targeted at countries with high number of travelers such as the United States, Spain, France, Germany, and Brazil.
Last week, the Cusco regional tourism board predicted they would receive 2 million tourists this year.
