Pisaq

Archaeological Park of Pisaq

From Cusco, it is located to 32 Km. Its attractiveness and picturesque town offers an elaborated craft in their fairs of Thursdays and Sundays with a long and colorful tradition.

Pisaq is one of the most visited places in the Sacred Valley of the Incas, for its a surprising archaeological monuments only comparable with Machu Picchu. It has an enormous system of Incan andenería that ascends up to the abysses, which resemble enormous hanging gardens. In spite of the step of the centuries, it can still be used for the agriculture. The archaeological place, located in the high part, it is conformed by neighborhoods. The Intiwatana, the biggest pre colombus cemetery in the continent, also its cultivation platforms (andenes) and the masthead turrets of vigilance.

Pisaq attends settlers of near towns and  thousands of visitors. One of the attractiveness of these fairs is the parade of the authorities or Varayocs who go to the town to listen the mass in Quechua, main language of the region. In the high part they are the Inca ruins of Písaq with a great system of andenerías and with an important solar clock in stone or Intihuatana.

Today Pisaq is one of the most important Archaeological Parks in the region and constitutes one of the best tourist destinations; their name possibly derives of a partridge type very common of this well-known area as "p'isaqa". Some specialists suggest that the prehispanic city had the form of a "p'isaqa" that represented the local fauna.

There are two forms to arrive to the archaeological colonial town:

By walking, taking the street in the western side of the current church and going by terracing and the mountain is a hard walk due to the altitude and the inclination that demand to one to be under good physical conditions.

On the other hand, to take a car that should follow toward the kilometer 8 for the northeast of the town to the parking park of which will be unavoidable to follow the 1.5 Kilometers.

When the conquerors arrived they found out the Incan beliefs about the tombs and they began with the diabolical profanations plundering of these the jewels, metals and precious stones. Pisaq at the moment contains plundered tombs; some mummies are still inside but not their jewels and the elements of daily life.

Intiwatana is the most important district in Pisaq, it corresponds to the ceremonial center or the religious complex of the city with constructions of type “sedimentary" walls; the juncture of refined stones has a rectangular external surface. Its situation in the superior part of the mountain is extraordinary and it dominates visually great part of the valley. This sector you should have constituted of diverse temples like the Qorikancha of Cusco with urns for the different deities.

The lack of information makes difficult to know if in each temple settlers would used to pray to two gods. In the central part of the complex there is a semicircular building with a lateral direct wall and the main door is toward the south, for deduction and analogy this was the Temple of the Sun in Pisaq.

Descending of the stairway from the Temple of Sun to the Southwest side is another conical carving that was used with the "Intiwatana". To the west there is an altar of carved stone that they represent the three Andean phases of the religious world: the heaven, the earthly world and the underground. This sculpture was possibly used as an element of help for the solar observations.

In this complex are some other temples with walls of very good quality. Their specific tasks are ignored nowadays. From this area there is a partial view of the river Vilcanota that on-line straight line flows approximately to 3.3 Km., in Incan times this river was totally channeled from Pisac until Ollantaytambo. The objective was to add lands of arable and to protect them covering a longitude approximately of 90 Km in the valley today in many sectors remains of the lateral walls of the river are observed.

The archaeological complex of Pisaq comprehends the sectors:

Kialla Q'asa, group of rooms that has followed the structure of the surface of the Cusco.

Tianayoc, located in the high part of the Intihuatana, their rooms are around the square.

Intihuatana, in the area is located the qorihuayrachina, solar observatory, qosqo, qolqas. Their architecture has fine finish, the buildings give expensive to the valley.

P'isaqa, residence group with semicircular platforms and sources of water.

Huimin, gets the attention for its location in reason that is in the hill.

Tantana marka, sector located in the later part of the hill where it is appreciated numerous tombs.
